What can I use for filter oil?
If you are in a real pinch, you could use regular motor oil on your air filter. It is better than nothing. If you are old-school, you have probably done so on many occasions. The problem is that motor oil pools in the airbox, distributes itself unevenly and can be sucked through the intake tract.

The BMC is still excellent in this regard. K&N vs OEM – OEM exceeds K&N quality in every way. In the end, the sound and quality improvement of the BMC over the K&N led me to choose the BMC filter overall. The K&N suffered from a lack of build quality and smaller surface area of the filter.
Why is my air filter covered in oil?
It is caused by excessive carbon deposits or engine sludge developing inside the crankcase. When the oil does not flow efficiently, excessive engine oil pressure will be created and cause extra oil to push through the PCV valve and into the air intake.

Will K&N filter damage my engine?
K&N filters will not damage the engine internals but they can damage or at least coat the Mass Air Flow sensor if your car has one and most cars now do. The oil that the K&N filter is soaked in can separate and contaminate the wires of the MAF.
